Ben Godfrey praised 21-year-old Everton “exceptional”
Everton defender Ben Godfrey has praised teammate Joao Virginia.
Virginia, 21, is a young goaltender who recently gained a few minutes in the first team due to injuries to Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen.
The young Portuguese started this weekend’s FA Cup loss to Manchester City, but came away with a solid reputation despite a 2-0 defeat.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t do much on the two goals he conceded.
But the Portuguese shooter made some brilliant saves, including one from Raheem Sterling in the second half.
Godfrey delivered a glowing verdict on Virginia of Everton, who he says still impresses in training.
“I was very impressed with his performance,” said Godfrey, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“He works hard every day in training. Some of the saves he made to keep us in the game [against Man City] were exceptional.
“I’m over the moon for him and, as long as he continues to work hard and try to improve himself, there will be many more appearances to come.”
Everton’s goalkeeper position is certainly interesting, as coach Carlo Ancelotti has occasionally changed despite having officially declared Pickford to be his number one.
Sweden international Olsen is a great replacement option, but he’s only on loan for the remainder of the season at Goodison Park by Roma.
It looks like the Merseyside team may not need to go to the market to sign a second-choice keeper.
Up-and-coming talent Virginia has seemed a constant presence in Everton’s net, although he hasn’t had much top-level exposure, but promoting him to Pickford’s understudy might be a natural decision.
